online tutoring business support for tutors

"Profitable" has several meanings: If you mean "profitable" in the sense of being "useful", the answer is surely YES.
If you mean "profitable" in the sense of allowing you (the tutor) to earn a living from it, I hope that the answer is yes as well, but here I am not so certain. Maybe one could say that online tutoring is "profitable" (in this sense) for some but not for others...
If you mean "profitable" in the sense of allowing you (the tutor) to get rich, I am quite convinced that the answer is NO.
The only way to get rich doing online tutoring (or doing tutoring more generally) is, in my humble opinion, not to work as a tutor at all but to found a tutoring company and have lots of relatively cheap, yet reasonably competent tutors do the actual tutoring - while your difficult job is to pocket the difference between what the students are willing to pay and what the tutors demand.
The founder of an online-tutoring company that folded recently said that the reasons for the failure of his company were mainly technical difficulties and that the demand was not as high as expected (not high enough to support an entire company, that is). I must add that I once visited the site of that company and tried to watch a demo of their tutoring tools: but that demo didn’t work. Of course, if you botch the job on the technical, even the marketing side, as this company seems to have done, then it’s not surprising at all that the students won’t come flocking to you...
The students that actually tried their online tutoring service seem to have been very enthusiastic about it, however. Surely my own tutees are enthusiastic about online tutoring. But much depends, not just on the qualities of the tutor but, unfortunately, also on the quality of the tools and the quality of your web presence as this German company seems to have found out the hard way.

You are correct with your initial thoughts. Online tutoring is profitable for some, but not for others. It comes down to being committed and having an exact plan of action to take.

For a tutor to become rich, I'd have to know what their definition of rich is. If the definition is earning $50,000 per year and staying at home with their family, I'd say yes this is definitely possible.

For a business person who defines getting rich as $1,000,000 net profit per year, I'd say it's possible, but there are many factors that would determine their success.

Your associate who ran an online tutoring company before might have been working with the wrong people if he was dealing with technical difficulties. As far as demand, you have to know where to put your message and this takes time and testing to find the right audience. Also, having an affiliate program that allows you to team up with websites who have the right parental audience is key.

You hit it on the head with your final comments. Students love online tutoring once they try it and assuming they have a good tutor. Of course, that's assuming the technology works well too.
